Baby… if your Maw Maw loved creamy crab dip but your blood sugar don’t, this one’s for YOU. This Cajun crab dip recipe is rich, melty, and Louisiana-level comforting—without going full “brick of calories.”

Creamy Cajun crab dip made in a crockpot with real crab, melted cheese, and Cajun seasoning

We’re doing smart swaps so it’s still a creamy crab dip that tastes like a party.

  • Cajun crab dip vibes: spicy, creamy, cheesy, and scoopable
  • Healthy crab dip swaps: light cream cheese + light mayo + half and half + Greek yogurt
  • Perfect for: game day, Mardi Gras appetizers, holidays, potlucks, “I need something easy but fancy” nights
  • Bonus: this can fit a keto crab dip style meal when you serve it with low-carb dippers

What Makes This Dip “Healthy”?

  • Protein-forward from real crab + Greek yogurt
  • Lower saturated fat than classic versions (thanks light cream cheese, light mayo, and half and half)
  • Still tastes like a Louisiana crab dip you’d bring to a family gathering and leave with an empty bowl

As a dietitian, I love recipes that keep the flavor loud while the nutrition stays sensible.

Healthy Cajun crab dip served warm with pork rinds

Ingredients (Crockpot Crab Dip Recipe)

  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic
  • 1/4 cup light mayo
  • 1 tsp Tony Spice N Herb Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 2 blocks light cream cheese, diced
  • 1 lb crab meat
  • 6 oz plain Greek yogurt (full fat)

How To Make Cajun Crab Dip (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Prep

  • Chop green onions + onion
  • Dice the light cream cheese into cubes (melts faster, no lumps)

Step 2: Load the slow cooker

  • Add everything EXCEPT the Greek yogurt:
    • onion + green onions
    • mozzarella
    • garlic
    • light mayo
    • Tony’s seasoning
    • half and half
    • diced light cream cheese
    • crab meat

Step 3: Cook

  • Cover and cook on LOW for 2 hours

Step 4: Make it extra creamy

  • Turn off heat (or keep on warm)
  • Stir in Greek yogurt until smooth and creamy

Step 5: Serve

  • Best dippers:
    • celery sticks
    • High Key Crackers
    • Fiber Gourmet Crackers

Crockpot Hot Crab Dip Tips (So It Turns Out PERFECT)

  • Use LOW heat (high heat can make dairy separate)
  • Dice cream cheese small = smoother dip faster
  • Add yogurt at the end (keeps it thick + creamy)
  • If it thickens too much:
    • stir in 1–2 Tbsp extra half and half

Health Benefits of Ingredients

Crab (hello protein!)

  • Lean protein that helps keep you full (and keeps this from being “just cheese dip”)
  • Naturally low carb, which is why this works great as keto crab dip when served with low-carb dippers
  • Shelly’s Dietitian Tip: choose crab with the shortest ingredient list—ideally “crab + water + salt.”

Light Cream Cheese

  • Gives that classic creamy texture with less fat than regular blocks
  • Still melts like a dream in the slow cooker
  • Helps keep this healthy crab dip rich without going overboard

Greek Yogurt (full fat, plain)

  • Adds creaminess + a protein boost
  • Tangy flavor balances spicy Cajun seasoning
  • Stirring it in at the end = that “fancy restaurant” texture

Why These Modifications WORK (and still taste indulgent)

  • Half and half: lighter than heavy cream, still creamy
  • Light cream cheese: keeps the dip thick + scoopable, less fat
  • Light mayo: keeps that classic dip “body” with fewer calories than full mayo

Tips for Selecting Ingredients (Shopping Smarts)

Crab Meat

  • Look for: lump or backfin if you want chunks; claw if you want stronger flavor
  • Avoid: “imitation crab” if you’re going for true Louisiana crab dip flavor
  • Check: container is cold, sealed, and the date is solid
  • If sodium matters: compare labels—crab products can vary a LOT

Green Onions + Onion

  • Green onions: bright green tops, not slimy, no strong sour smell
  • Onion: firm, dry skin, no soft spots or sprouting

Dairy (light cream cheese / half and half / yogurt)

  • Choose plain Greek yogurt (not vanilla, not sweetened)
  • Light cream cheese should be cold + firm (soft = it’s been temperature-abused)
  • Half and half: check freshest date—older dairy separates easier in crockpots

What To Serve With Crab Dip

Low-carb + crunchy

  • Celery sticks, cucumber rounds, bell pepper strips
  • Parmesan crisps
  • High Key crackers

Higher fiber options (my favorite for blood sugar!)

  • Fiber Gourmet crackers
  • High-fiber tortilla chips (portion-controlled)
  • Seed crackers (watch serving sizes) (such as Flackers)

Party add-ons

  • Shrimp tray, veggie tray, pickles, olives
  • A big salad + protein so this stays an appetizer, not dinner

Variations (Make It Your Way)

  • Spicier Cajun crab dip: add cayenne, hot sauce, or diced jalapeños
  • More “restaurant style” creamy crab dip: add 2 Tbsp grated parmesan
  • Extra cheesy: swap part of mozzarella for pepper jack
  • Garlic lover: add 1/2 tsp garlic powder + your 1 tsp garlic
  • Lighter texture: use 0–2% Greek yogurt (still add at the end)
  • Oven option: bake at 350°F in a dish ~20 minutes until bubbly (stir yogurt in after baking)

FAQ

Can I make this Cajun crab dip ahead of time?

Yes! Make it, cool it, and store in the fridge. Reheat on LOW in the crockpot and stir well before serving.

Why do you add Greek yogurt at the end?

It keeps the dip extra creamy and helps prevent dairy from separating.

What to serve with crab dip if I’m watching carbs?

Celery, cucumber, bell pepper strips, parmesan crisps, and low-carb crackers are great options.

Can I use canned crab or imitation crab?

You can use canned crab (drain well). Imitation crab changes the flavor and carbs—real crab gives that true Louisiana crab dip taste.

Is this keto crab dip?

The dip is very low carb; serve it with low-carb dippers (celery, seed crackers) to keep it keto-style.
